Preschool for 2-year-olds

At Woodcrest Preschool, our preschool for 2-year-olds introduces children to the exciting world of letters and their sounds through interactive and joyful methods. Using songs, books, pictures, and more, we help children begin recognizing letters and connecting them to the sounds they make, laying a strong foundation for future reading success.  

Recognizing their own name is a big milestone for 2-year-olds, and we make it fun! Through daily activities like our “Who Is Here Today” song, attendance routines, and personalized pictures paired with each child’s name, we encourage name recognition and help children feel a sense of belonging in our classroom community.  

Pre-writing skills are the building blocks for writing, and we guide 2-year-olds in developing these essentials. By practicing fundamental strokes like lines, circles, and shapes (| , —, O, +, /, etc.) through playful preschool activities for 2-year-olds, we strengthen their ability to hold and use a pencil, setting the stage for drawing, writing, and copying with confidence as they grow.  

Our 2-year-old preschool curriculum introduces key pre-math concepts to prepare your child for elementary school success. Through hands-on exploration, 2-year-olds learn to count, recognize numerals, identify shapes and colors, sort objects, and understand ideas like size and patterns—building a strong early math foundation with activities that spark curiosity and joy.  

Play is at the heart of learning for 2-year-olds, and we encourage it daily! Through guided play and sharing opportunities, children develop social skills, cooperation, and communication as they engage with peers, take turns, and participate in group activities designed to nurture their growing independence.  

Imagination thrives in our dramatic play areas! Each classroom features a dress-up corner and kitchen setup, with props and items swapped out to match themes, holidays, and special events, offering children a chance to role-play, explore cultures, and express themselves creatively in a dynamic environment.  

Understanding feelings is a vital part of growing up, and we’re here to help. Our curriculum supports 2-year-olds in recognizing and managing their emotions, building empathy, and forming positive relationships with peers and teachers in a nurturing space that fosters emotional growth.  

Sensory play is a cornerstone of our 2-year-old preschool program, engaging children in hands-on experiences that stimulate their senses. From squishing playdough to exploring textures, these activities not only spark curiosity but also enhance fine motor skills and cognitive development in a fun, messy, and meaningful way.  

We strengthen little hands and fingers through sensory-rich activities tailored for 2-year-olds. Whether they’re stringing beads, snipping with scissors, painting with wrist action, or rolling playdough, our program builds the coordination and control needed for milestones like holding a crayon with fingers (not a fist) and eating independently. 

At Woodcrest Preschool, we help 2-year-olds build their physical confidence through whole-body movement. Activities like walking smoothly around corners, beginning to run, climbing onto furniture, and picking up toys without falling over strengthen their large muscles and eye-hand coordination, preparing them for active play and everyday adventures.  

We spark curiosity about the world with foundational knowledge tailored for 2-year-olds, introducing basic concepts that form the bedrock of their early education. Through engaging activities, children explore ideas like seasons, weather, parts of the body, animals, fruits, vegetables, community helpers, and good habits—building a broad base of understanding that connects them to their surroundings.  

These concepts, such as basic colors (red, blue, green), sizes (big, little), shapes (round, square), and opposites like happy and sad or rough and smooth, help children follow directions, join classroom routines, and chat with friends. Mastering these essentials—often presented as pairs like hot and cold or first and next—sets the stage for success in reading, writing, and math, directly boosting their school performance as they grow. 

Creativity blossoms with our arts and crafts experiences! Using sensory-rich projects like playdough creations and simple designs, 2-year-olds develop fine motor skills, hand-eye coordination, and problem-solving abilities while expressing their imagination in a fun, hands-on way that boosts confidence and independence.  

We support 2-year-olds and their families through the diapering and potty-training journey with care and patience. Our experienced staff provides a consistent, encouraging environment to help children transition at their own pace, fostering independence and confidence during this important developmental stage.  

Each month, we focus on a unique character trait to guide 2-year-olds in becoming kind, thoughtful individuals. Through stories, activities, and discussions, we introduce values like sharing, respect, and perseverance, helping children develop a strong moral foundation in a supportive setting.
