3-year-old Preschool Program
At Woodcrest Preschool, we believe that the early years of a child’s life are the most crucial for laying the foundation for lifelong learning. Our 3-year-old preschool program is designed to provide a nurturing and stimulating environment where young children can thrive. We emphasize the importance of social-emotional growth, helping children develop skills like empathy, communication, and self-regulation as they interact with peers and adults.
Our Innovative Approach to Preschool Education for 3-year-olds
Our innovative approach to 3-year-old education is designed to foster a love of learning from the earliest stages. With a commitment to excellence, we maintain a low teacher-to-child ratio of 1:8 for our 3-year-olds, ensuring each child receives personalized attention and care. As an NAEYC-accredited institution, we uphold the highest standards in early childhood education, offering an enriching curriculum that goes beyond traditional learning. Our enhanced programs include language development, arts integration, and outdoor exploration, all tailored to inspire curiosity and growth in our young learners.
Our Groundbreaking
Curriculum for 3-year-olds
In preschool it’s important to focus on developing your child’s early literacy skills and critical thinking and encourage them to use their creativity through fun and simple activities.
Our 3-year-olds dive into the world of letters and phonics through engaging, multi-sensory activities like songs, books, and picture-based games. Each week, we focus on recognizing a specific letter and its sound, using creative tools such as tracing letters, identifying sounds in playful chants, and clapping out syllables. These activities spark curiosity and lay the groundwork for early literacy by introducing foundational phonics and phonemic awareness, making learning both fun and memorable.
Helping our 3-year-olds recognize and practice writing their names is a key focus of our program. Each child has a personalized name card with their picture displayed on their cubby, reinforcing name recognition daily. Through consistent practice, students begin writing their first name in upper and lowercase letters using worksheets and art projects. This builds early literacy skills, fosters a sense of identity, and prepares them for future writing tasks.
Pre-writing skills are essential for developing the ability to hold and use a pencil effectively. Our 3-year-olds engage in activities that build these foundational skills, such as drawing pre-writing shapes like lines (|), dashes (—), circles (O), and crosses (+). Through hands-on tasks like tracing, coloring, and crafting, children strengthen fine motor abilities and hand-eye coordination, setting the stage for legible writing while boosting confidence and reducing frustration.
We introduce pre-math skills to prepare our 3-year-olds for elementary school success. Children explore concepts like size, shape, and patterns through sorting activities, learn to count forward verbally, and begin recognizing numerals. Hands-on experiences, such as matching sets or identifying “more” and “less,” build number sense and one-to-one correspondence. These early math foundations spark logical thinking and curiosity, from counting blocks to exploring spatial ideas like “up” and “down.”
Playtime doubles as a learning opportunity in our 3-year-old school programs. Small play centers encourage children to share toys and interact respectfully with peers, fostering cooperation and teamwork. When conflicts arise, teachers guide students through discussions about taking turns and expressing feelings, helping them develop empathy and social skills. This nurturing approach builds confidence as children learn to navigate friendships and recognize emotions like joy or frustration.
Each classroom features a dress-up area and kitchen for dramatic play, where creativity and imagination thrive. We rotate items based on themes, holidays, or special events, offering opportunities to explore cultural diversity and real-world scenarios. Whether pretending to cook or dressing up as community helpers, 3-year-olds develop social skills, self-expression, and confidence through this dynamic, hands-on play experience tailored to their interests.
Social and emotional growth is at the heart of our curriculum, guided by Dr. Becky Bailey’s “Conscious Discipline” program. Through storytelling, role-play, and circle-time discussions about feelings, children build empathy, self-regulation, and emotional awareness. Teachers model kindness and understanding, helping 3-year-olds articulate emotions and collaborate with peers, creating a compassionate classroom community that supports lifelong interpersonal skills. Sensory play engages our 3-year-olds’ senses—touch, sight, sound, smell, and taste—through exciting, hands-on activities. From squishing clay to exploring textured materials, children encounter new sensations that spark curiosity and learning. These experiences not only enhance sensory development but also support fine motor skills and emotional regulation, allowing young learners to form positive connections with the world around them in a safe, playful environment.
Fine motor skills, like writing, cutting, and opening lunch boxes, are honed through sensory-rich activities tailored for 3-year-olds. Children build towers with small blocks, snip paper with scissors, copy circles, and roll clay into shapes—milestones that strengthen hand control and coordination. With teacher guidance, these tasks enhance dexterity and prepare students for everyday tasks, all while keeping the process engaging and fun.
Gross motor development is nurtured through active play that builds strength and coordination. Through comprehensive preschool education, our 3-year-olds pedal tricycles, climb ladders, jump with both feet, and walk upstairs with alternating feet—key milestones that boost physical confidence. Outdoor games and movement activities, like catching with their bodies or balancing on tiptoes, enhance eye-hand coordination and overall agility in a supportive, energetic setting.
We introduce basic concepts to expand our 3-year-olds’ understanding of the world, from seasons and weather to parts of the body and community helpers. Through songs, stories, and hands-on exploration, children learn about animals, plants, good manners, and more. These foundational science and general knowledge topics foster curiosity and critical thinking, helping young learners make sense of their surroundings.
Arts and crafts ignite creativity and support early childhood development in our 3-year-old program. Children engage in sensory art projects—like painting or shaping playdough—that build fine motor skills, problem-solving, and self-expression. These activities boost confidence, hand-eye coordination, and critical thinking, offering a fun, interactive way to explore imagination while mastering skills that last a lifetime.
Our 3-year-olds build healthy bathroom habits with a consistent restroom routine. Teachers guide students to the restroom every 1 to 1.5 hours, reinforcing independence and self-care. This predictable schedule helps children feel comfortable and confident in managing their needs, fostering a positive approach to personal hygiene as a natural part of their day.
Each month, we focus on a different character-building trait—like courage, kindness, or responsibility—to help our 3-year-olds develop strong habits for life. Through stories, discussions, and activities, children explore values such as cooperation, gratitude, and self-control. This intentional approach nurtures resilience and compassion, laying a foundation for positive behavior and emotional growth.
Our Enhanced Programs
At Woodcrest Preschool, we tailor each of our enhanced programs specifically for 3-year-olds to ensure every activity and lesson is developmentally appropriate for their age. While all age groups enjoy the same core programs, we customize the content and approach to match the unique skills, abilities, and interests of each stage—whether it’s adapting STEAM explorations or writing center activities for 3-year-olds versus older preschoolers. From hands-on animal encounters to creative arts, each program is thoughtfully designed to inspire curiosity, build foundational skills, and nurture growth in a way that resonates with our young learners, setting them apart as they progress through their preschool journey.
Live Animal Exploration
Through our partnership with Critter Squad, our 3-year-olds enjoy bi-weekly live animal exploration sessions that bring the natural world to life. These hands-on interactions introduce children to concepts like omnivores, nocturnal habits, and the differences between cold-blooded and warm-blooded animals, all tailored to their developmental level. By meeting reptiles, mammals, and more, they foster respect for living creatures, spark curiosity about ecosystems, and begin to see themselves as part of a broader natural community.

Yoga & Gymnastics
Our yoga and gymnastics preschool program alternates seasonally, offering 3-year-olds a playful way to explore movement and build resilience. In yoga, a dedicated teacher visits classrooms to teach simple poses that enhance balance, flexibility, and mindfulness, while gymnastics introduces basic tumbling and coordination skills in a fun, supportive setting. Both activities strengthen core muscles and gross motor skills, helping children develop confidence and self-regulation as they adapt to their busy world.
Gardening
Our gardening program invites 3-year-olds to dig in and connect with nature by planting, tending, and harvesting fruits and vegetables. This hands-on experience teaches patience and responsibility as they care for plants together, fostering teamwork and a sense of accomplishment when they taste their homegrown produce. Tailored to their age, the program deepens their appreciation for the environment and introduces the growth process in a simple, engaging way.

Fine Arts
Our fine arts program brings a new artist to 3-year-olds each month through our “Artist Each Month” feature, inspiring them to create their own masterpieces with simple mediums like paint and clay. By exploring line, shape, and color through hands-on projects and viewing real artworks, they discover art’s beauty and diversity. This age-tailored approach nurtures creativity and cultural awareness while building fine motor skills.
Outdoor Classroom
Our outdoor classroom offers 3-year-olds a daily adventure in nature, where they play games, observe life cycles, and explore rocks, insects, and plants. Physical activities like climbing, digging, and balancing build gross motor skills, while tailored lessons about weather and nature foster curiosity. This immersive space helps them connect with the environment and develop a lifelong love for the outdoors.

Cooking Healthy Foods
In our weekly cooking program, 3-year-olds explore healthy eating through fun, safe, and simple recipes. Using child-friendly tools, they practice measuring, stirring, and cutting, building fine motor skills while learning about nutrition and diverse cuisines. This hands-on approach introduces basic cooking vocabulary and the joy of preparing food, connecting them to cultures and healthy habits in a way that’s just right for their age.
Liberal Arts
Each month, our liberal arts program introduces 3-year-olds to a new author through our “Author Each Month” focus, sparking a love for reading with diverse stories. These read-alouds, adjusted for their age, enhance vocabulary, comprehension, and listening skills while exposing them to different cultures and ideas. With a fresh selection of authors each year, this program lays a strong foundation for language development and literary appreciation.

Language & Culture
Our language and culture program introduces 3-year-olds to global diversity through simple greetings, stories, and activities about numbers, colors, and animals. With dance, music, and art, they explore world cultures and holidays, culminating in a May focus on continents and countries. This age-appropriate journey builds foundational social studies skills and instills respect for all communities in an engaging, interactive way.
STEAM
Our STEAM program introduces 3-year-olds to Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics through age-appropriate, hands-on activities. Simple experiments, building projects, and creative challenges spark curiosity and critical thinking, all designed to be playful and accessible for young learners. Unlike our TK program’s STEAM Lab, this version focuses on foundational exploration, igniting an early love for discovery that grows with them.
Each classroom reads a book featuring a problem for students to solve. For example, after reading The Three Bears, children build a sturdy chair for a teddy bear, or after The Three Billy Goats Gruff, they construct a strong bridge to cross safely. STEAM activities also connect to the weekly theme, with students reading about a topic and then building something related to it. In the three-year-old classroom, STEAM begins as a teacher-led group activity before children branch out to explore materials independently, encouraging both guided learning and creative problem-solving.

Rhythm and Music
Our rhythm and music preschool program engages 3-year-olds with songs, beats, and simple instruments, fostering a sense of rhythm and coordination. Through group singing and movement, they explore sound patterns and express themselves, enhancing social skills and auditory development. Designed for their age, this lively program builds a foundation for musical appreciation and joyful learning.
Dance
Our dance program invites 3-year-olds to move and groove, exploring basic steps and rhythms in a fun, supportive setting. Tailored to their abilities, it boosts gross motor skills, balance, and confidence while encouraging self-expression through movement. Whether swaying to music or learning simple choreography, children discover the joy of dance as a creative outlet.

Listening Center
Our listening center provides 3-year-olds with a cozy space to enjoy age-appropriate stories, songs, and sounds through headphones or small-group sessions. This program sharpens listening skills, boosts comprehension, and expands vocabulary in a calm, focused way. Designed for young learners, it nurtures a love for audio storytelling and supports early language development.
Writing Center
Our three-year-old classrooms have a dedicated writing center where children can explore early writing and fine motor skills. They have access to paper, crayons, markers, stencils, tracing letter stencils, Magna Doodles, stamps, and other engaging materials that support pre-writing development.
Students are encouraged to practice making marks, tracing letters, and exploring different writing tools at their own pace. These activities help strengthen their fine motor skills, build hand-eye coordination, and introduce them to letter formation in a fun and supportive environment.
