Empowering Early Learners for Bright Futures
Woodcrest’s Outstanding TK Program
Transitional Kindergarten (TK) is an educational program designed for children who turn five years old between September 2nd and March 1st of the academic year. Woodcrest’s TK program offers children extra time to help build a stronger educational foundation for Kindergarten. We incorporate learning and play through our innovative enrichment programs and modified, age-appropriate Kindergarten curriculum. Classes are small to ensure students learn at an individualized pace to accommodate all types of learning styles. After TK, most students are adequately prepared for Kindergarten.
Our Groundbreaking
Transitional Kindergarten Curriculum
At Woodcrest Preschool, our Transitional Kindergarten (TK) program is designed to build a strong foundation for your child’s future learning. We focus on developing essential skills through engaging, hands-on activities that spark curiosity and foster independence. Our Transitional Kindergarten curriculum emphasizes social-emotional growth, early literacy, math readiness, physical development, and creativity, preparing your child for a smooth transition to kindergarten and beyond.
In our TK program, your child embarks on an exciting journey to recognize letters and their sounds! Through songs, books, pictures, and playful activities, we explore the alphabet together. Each week, we focus on a new letter, learning its uppercase and lowercase forms and the phonetic sounds it makes. Whether singing a catchy tune or matching objects to letters, these activities make learning to read fun and memorable.
We help your child take pride in their identity by practicing writing their first and last names in both uppercase and lowercase letters. Daily activities reinforce name recognition, and we extend this practice to learning the names of classmates, fostering a sense of community. Through tracing, writing, and playful repetition, your child builds confidence in this foundational skill.
Pre-writing skills are the building blocks of legible handwriting. In TK, your child develops the ability to hold and use a pencil through mastering basic strokes like lines (| and —), circles (O), and shapes (square, triangle, X). These skills enhance their ability to draw, write, and color with control. Fun activities like tracing and copying shapes strengthen hand muscles, setting the stage for fluent writing in elementary school.
Our TK program introduces key math concepts to prepare your child for elementary school. They’ll learn to count forward (and later backward) up to 100, recognize numerals, and explore shapes, colors, and patterns. Hands-on activities like sorting blocks by size or matching sets teach number sense and one-to-one correspondence. From counting steps to estimating “more” or “less,” we make math a natural part of play.
Playtime is learning time in TK! Through structured play and sharing opportunities, your child practices cooperation, communication, and turn-taking. Whether passing out snacks or working together on a project, these moments build social skills and confidence. We encourage your child to express ideas and listen to others, creating a supportive classroom community.
Each TK classroom features a dress-up area and kitchen for imaginative play. We rotate items to match monthly themes, holidays, or special events, keeping the experience fresh and culturally rich. From pretending to cook a meal to dressing up as community helpers, dramatic play sparks creativity, builds language skills, and helps your child explore the world around them.
Understanding feelings is a big part of TK! We guide your child in recognizing and managing emotions, fostering empathy and self-awareness. Through stories, discussions, and group activities, they learn to navigate friendships, express needs, and handle challenges. This emotional foundation helps them thrive both in and out of the classroom. Click here to learn more!
Sensory play engages your child’s senses—touch, sight, sound, smell, and taste—making learning irresistible. Activities like squishing playdough, sorting textured objects, or exploring sand trays introduce new sensations and encourage discovery. These hands-on experiences boost curiosity while supporting fine motor and cognitive development.
Fine motor skills power everyday tasks like writing and cutting. In TK, your child refines these abilities through sensory-rich activities—think coloring within lines, cutting simple shapes, or pasting crafts. By TK age, California students can master a 3-finger pencil grasp and draw basic pictures. These skills build independence and precision for kindergarten success.
Big movements matter too! Our California Transitional Kindergarten program strengthens gross motor skills through active play. Your child will jump forward 10 times, walk a balance beam, or skip with a rope, all while developing coordination and balance. Milestones like catching a ball with hands or running lightly on toes prepare them for physical challenges and boost confidence.
TK introduces your child to the world through basic concepts like seasons, weather, and parts of the body. They’ll explore days of the week, animals, plants, and community helpers through interactive lessons. From discussing why leaves fall to learning good manners, these activities broaden their general knowledge and connect them to their surroundings.
Arts and crafts ignite creativity and self-expression in TK! Your child explores colors, shapes, and textures using crayons, glue, feathers, and more. We introduce famous artists, make music with drums and maracas, and create projects tied to our themes. These activities sharpen fine motor skills, boost problem-solving, and build confidence through hands-on fun.
Each month, we focus on a new character trait—like kindness, courage, or responsibility—to help your child grow into a thoughtful individual. Through stories, role-playing, and group activities, we nurture habits like cooperation, gratitude, and patience. Building character at Transitional Kindergarten age lays a lifelong foundation for strong values and resilience.
Our Enhanced Programs
At Woodcrest Preschool, we tailor each of our enhanced programs specifically for TK to ensure every activity and lesson is developmentally appropriate for their age. While all age groups enjoy the same core programs, we customize the content and approach to match the unique skills, abilities, and interests of each stage.
Live Animal Exploration
Through our partnership with Critter Squad, we offer our TK students an exciting live animal exploration experience, where they can learn about fascinating creatures such as reptiles, birds, and small mammals. These sessions, designed to spark their curiosity, give children the opportunity to observe, touch, and ask questions about the animals. This hands-on approach nurtures a sense of wonder and respect for nature while boosting their vocabulary and observational skills in a fun and age-appropriate way.

Yoga & Gymnastics
To keep our TK students active and balanced, we switch between yoga and gymnastics each season. Yoga sessions feature simple poses and breathing exercises to help improve focus, flexibility, and calmness, while gymnastics introduces basic tumbling and coordination through fun, playful movements. These activities are tailored to their energy levels and motor skills, fostering physical confidence and body awareness.
Gardening
Our TK gardening program encourages students to dig in the soil, plant seeds, and watch their hard work flourish, aligning with their growing curiosity and sense of responsibility towards the natural world. Through hands-on activities like watering plants and harvesting vegetables, they explore life cycles, patience, and teamwork in a simple, sensory-rich way that’s ideal for their developmental stage.

Fine Arts
Our Fine Arts program introduces TK students to a new artist each month, sparking creativity at their level. They explore the artist’s style through simple projects—such as painting like Monet or sculpting like Calder—using materials suited for young hands. These activities not only boost fine motor skills and self-expression but also make art history fun and accessible for young learners.
Outdoor Classroom
Our Outdoor Classroom takes learning outside! Whether counting leaves, observing weather, or storytelling under the sky, your child connects with nature while building knowledge and imagination in a fresh, open space.

Cooking Healthy Foods
Our TK cooking activities are designed for little hands, allowing students to measure, mix, and taste as they prepare snacks like fruit kabobs or mini sandwiches. Tailored to their developmental needs, these lessons help build fine motor skills, introduce basic math concepts such as counting spoonfuls, and promote healthy eating habits—all while engaging their senses and encouraging independence in a safe, supervised environment.
Liberal Arts
Each month, we feature a different author in our Liberal Arts program! Your child dives into captivating stories, expanding vocabulary and imagination while discovering the joy of books and ideas. Daily read-aloud sessions introduce new vocabulary, sentence structures, and storytelling techniques, enhancing language development and critical thinking. Reading is also an essential part of the daily routine, creating a structured and engaging environment for learning.

Language & Culture
We introduce TK students to language and culture through songs, stories, and simple words from different parts of the world, designed to ignite their curiosity about diversity from an early age. Activities such as learning greetings in Spanish or exploring cultural holidays through crafts are tailored to their developing communication skills, fostering empathy and global awareness in an engaging and relatable way.
STEAM Lab
Our STEAM Lab blends Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math into interactive fun! Your child explores, experiments, and creates with activities like building simple structures or mixing colors, igniting a love for discovery and innovation.
STEAM in TK happens in two ways: students visit the STEAM lab to work on larger projects with the STEAM teacher and also experiment with STEAM activities in the classroom. They follow a structured process—plan, build, test, revise—to strengthen critical thinking and teamwork skills.

Rhythm and Music
Rhythm and music come to life for our TK students through singing, clapping, and playing simple instruments like tambourines and maracas, all designed to match their developmental stage. These activities enhance auditory skills, coordination, and rhythm while promoting group participation and joy, perfectly catering to their love of movement and sound.
Dance
Our TK dance program encourages students to move to music with simple steps and creative expression, supporting their developing coordination and confidence. Whether they’re following a teacher-led routine or creating their own moves, children enhance their gross motor skills and self-awareness in a fun, supportive environment that embraces their natural energy.

Listening Center
In our listening center, TK students wear headphones to enjoy stories and songs, designed to enhance their attention spans and auditory processing skills. This quiet, focused activity allows them to follow stories independently, improving comprehension and vocabulary in an engaging, age-appropriate way while nurturing a love for storytelling.
Writing Center
In our Transitional Kindergarten (TK) writing centers, students build confidence in letter and number formation through daily writing activities. They practice tracing, independent writing, and name recognition to strengthen fine motor skills and early literacy. Teachers provide guidance to ensure proper pencil grip, letter formation, and the safe use of writing materials while encouraging independence and creativity.

Physical Education
Physical Education at Woodcrest is all about active fun! From team games to fitness challenges, our young learners build coordination, confidence, and teamwork. We focus on fostering a love for physical activity while helping children develop balance, strength, and social skills in a supportive and encouraging environment.
