October is a great time of year to make crafts because it kicks off the holiday season and features an array of natural craft ideas. Finding October crafts should not be a hard task between leaves, Halloween, pumpkins, corn patches, turkeys, and cornucopias. To bring some classroom fun home, we have compiled a list of simple October crafts your preschooler will love.
Pom Pom Owls
This is a simple craft that preschoolers love because, basically, if you use pompoms are a surefire hit no matter what you are gluing them to. To start, cut out a designated amount of brown owl shapes on either tagboard or foam board. Then create a few dozen two-inch circles that will become the owl’s eyes when added to the paper by your students. Accentuate with Googly Eyes and then provide children with a bowl of pompoms to glue onto the body to create features.
Scarecrow Paper Plate Face
October crafts are a great time to capitalize on the pumpkin patch theme since most of your students will hit up at least one patch during the fall. For this simple craft, provide all students with two Googly Eyes, a black piece of felt, two one-inch pink circles, an orange triangle nose, and a large yellow triangle that will serve as the hat. Have students glue the face onto their paper plate and then top the design off with the yellow triangle hat on the top of the plate. For extra fun, use craft hay to stick pieces of hair out under the hat.
Bird Feeders
Perhaps one of the oldest October crafts on our list, bird feeders are always fun to make during the fall months, and the birds will appreciate your students. Given the prevalence of peanut butter allergies, we suggest opting for sunflower butter (the birds won’t mind)! Simply roll a pinecone in the sunflower butter and then have kids roll the pinecone in birdseed to create a natural feeder.
Pinecone Snake
This is a great craft the entire class can participate in to make a fun fall-themed decoration item for the classroom. Have each student paint a pinecone a different color. Then glue tougher the pinecones to create a long winding snake body. Turn the front pine cone on its side, add two eyes, and you have a pinecone snake the entire class will love.
Turkey Craft Sticks
Round out your October crafts by getting ready for the next month’s holiday. November goes fast, so get your turkey crafts in while you can with this simple activity. Glue three craft sticks together and then give the finished boards to each student. Let them paint or color them brown and add two googly eyes and a small triangle nose. Then they can color six feathers using fall colors (yellow, red, orange, etc.) and glue the feathers onto their final result. Instant turkeys everyone can feel good about.
