Why Woodcrest Pre-K Stands Out
Woodcrest’s Pre-K program is for children ages 4-5 years old the year before they enter kindergarten. Children who turn 5 between September 2nd and December 2nd will attend our transitional kindergarten program. At Woodcrest Pre-K, we thoroughly prepare our students for kindergarten by focusing on critical skills and knowledge. We emphasize fine motor skills, letters, numbers, shapes, colors, writing, social-emotional skills, and STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics). Our comprehensive approach equips your little one academically, socially, and emotionally for the next step in their educational journey!
Our Groundbreaking
Pre-Kindergarten Cranium Curriculum
In our Pre-K curriculum, your child will discover phonics, learn to write letters and numbers independently, and master writing their own name! We also place a strong emphasis on learning to play and share with other children and learning to understand their feelings to prepare them to be successful in kindergarten.
We help our Pre-K students recognize letters and their sounds through fun, interactive methods like songs, storybooks, and picture-based activities. By engaging with letters in creative ways, children build a strong foundation for reading and language development, setting them up for success as they progress in their educational journey.
In our Pre-K program, children learn to recognize and write their own names—a key milestone in building confidence and identity. Through hands-on activities like tracing, spelling with blocks, and personalized crafts, we make this process engaging and meaningful, helping each child take pride in their accomplishments.
Pre-writing skills are the building blocks of writing success, and we nurture these through activities that develop a child’s ability to hold and use a pencil effectively. Our students practice foundational shapes like lines, circles, and crosses—skills that pave the way for drawing, writing, and copying. These activities strengthen hand-eye coordination and fine motor control, ensuring children can express themselves clearly and confidently on paper.
Our Pre-K program introduces key math concepts to prepare children for elementary school. Students explore size, shape, and patterns, learn to count forward and backward, and recognize numerals. Through hands-on activities like sorting by color or size and matching sets, they develop an understanding of quantities and one-to-one correspondence. This early math foundation fosters curiosity and problem-solving skills that will grow with them.
Playing and sharing are at the heart of our Pre-K experience. Through group games and collaborative projects, children learn to take turns, cooperate, and build friendships. These activities teach essential social skills, helping students thrive in a community setting while enjoying the fun of learning together.
Each classroom features a dress-up area and play kitchen for dramatic play, where creativity takes center stage. We rotate items to match monthly themes, holidays, or special events, offering children a chance to explore different roles and cultures. This imaginative play fosters storytelling, problem-solving, and social connections in a dynamic, hands-on environment.
Understanding feelings and emotions is a cornerstone of our curriculum. We guide children in recognizing and managing their own emotions while empathizing with others. Through stories, discussions, and role-playing, students develop the emotional tools they need to navigate relationships and challenges with confidence and kindness.
Sensory play engages children’s senses—touch, sight, sound, smell, and taste—through activities like playing with sand, water, or textured materials. These experiences spark curiosity and creativity while supporting cognitive growth and fine motor development. Sensory play is a fun, natural way for Pre-K students to explore the world around them.
We strengthen fine motor skills daily with sensory-rich activities like cutting along lines, writing names, and copying shapes or letters. From dressing themselves to using crayons, our students build the hand strength and coordination needed for tasks like opening lunch boxes or tying shoes. These skills lay the groundwork for independence and academic success.
Gross motor development is a daily adventure in our Pre-K program. Outside, children enjoy activities like catching and throwing balls, walking on balance beams, or hopping on one foot. These exercises build core strength, coordination, and confidence, helping students master skills like running lightly, skipping, or jumping with both feet together.
Our curriculum introduces foundational knowledge like seasons, weather, parts of the body, and days of the week. Through songs, games, and discussions, children learn about their world—exploring topics like animals, plants, community helpers, and good habits. These concepts broaden their understanding and spark a lifelong love of discovery.
Arts and crafts are a vital part of our Pre-K day, nurturing creativity, fine motor skills, and problem-solving. Students paint, glue, and color, creating projects inspired by our Artist of the Month or their own imaginations. These activities boost confidence, self-expression, and hand-eye coordination, making learning both fun and impactful.
Each month, we focus on a unique character trait—like kindness, perseverance, or honesty—to help children grow into thoughtful individuals. Through stories, activities, and group discussions, we encourage students to practice these values, fostering a strong moral foundation and positive habits that last a lifetime.
Our Enhanced Programs
At Woodcrest Preschool, we tailor each of our enhanced programs specifically for Pre-K to ensure every activity and lesson is developmentally appropriate for their age. While all age groups enjoy the same core programs, we customize the content and approach to match the unique skills, abilities, and interests of each stage.
Live Animal Exploration
Through our partnership with Critter Squad, we bring live animal exploration to our Pre-K students, introducing them to fascinating creatures like reptiles, birds, and small mammals. Tailored to their curiosity, these sessions allow children to observe, touch, and ask questions about the animals, fostering a sense of wonder and respect for nature while enhancing their vocabulary and observation skills in an engaging, age-appropriate way.

Yoga & Gymnastics
We alternate between yoga and gymnastics each season to keep our Pre-K students active and balanced. Yoga sessions are designed with simple poses and breathing exercises to help them build focus, flexibility, and calm, while gymnastics introduces basic tumbling and coordination skills through playful movements. These activities are customized to their energy levels and motor development, promoting physical confidence and body awareness.
Gardening
Our Pre-K gardening program invites students to dig in the dirt, plant seeds, and watch their efforts bloom, tailored to their growing sense of responsibility and curiosity about the natural world. Through hands-on tasks like watering plants or harvesting vegetables, they learn about life cycles, patience, and teamwork in a way that’s simple, sensory-rich, and perfect for their developmental stage.

Fine Arts
Our Fine Arts program introduces Pre-K students to a different artist each month, designed to inspire creativity at their level. They explore the artist’s style through simple projects—like painting like Monet or sculpting like Calder—using kid-friendly materials. These activities enhance fine motor skills and self-expression while making art history accessible and exciting for young learners.
Outdoor Classroom
Our outdoor classroom takes learning beyond four walls, designed specifically for Pre-K students to explore nature through guided activities like scavenger hunts or weather observations. Tailored to their boundless energy and curiosity, this space helps them connect concepts like seasons or animal habitats to what they see and touch, boosting sensory development and a love for the outdoors.

Cooking Healthy Foods
Our Pre-K cooking activities are simplified for little hands, letting students measure, mix, and taste as they create snacks like fruit kabobs or mini sandwiches. Tailored to their developmental abilities, these lessons build fine motor skills, introduce basic math concepts like counting spoonfuls, and encourage healthy eating habits—all while delighting their senses and fostering independence in a safe, supervised setting.
Liberal Arts
Each month, our Pre-K students meet a new author through stories read aloud, tailored to their listening skills and imagination. We explore the author’s background and dive into their books with activities like acting out scenes or drawing favorite characters, fostering early literacy, comprehension, and a love for reading in a way that captivates their young minds.

Language & Culture
We introduce Pre-K students to language and culture through songs, stories, and simple words from around the world, crafted to spark their interest in diversity at an early age. Activities like learning a greeting in Spanish or exploring a cultural holiday through crafts are tailored to their growing communication skills, building empathy and global awareness in a fun, relatable way.
STEAM
In our Pre-K STEAM program, we blend Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Math into playful, real-world challenges designed for young learners. For example, after reading a story like The Three Little Pigs, students build sturdy houses using various materials, testing their ideas against a “big bad wolf” fan. This approach connects stories to tangible problem-solving, sparking creativity and critical thinking in an accessible, Pre-K-friendly format.
STEAM learning is also tied to the weekly theme, where children read about a specific event or topic and then create something related to that theme. After reading the book, Pre-K students map out a plan and, with minimal help from teachers, work independently to engineer their designs. This approach encourages problem-solving, creativity, and the development of critical thinking skills.

Rhythm and Music
Rhythm and music come alive for our Pre-K students through singing, clapping, and playing simple instruments like tambourines or maracas, all tailored to their developmental stage. These activities build auditory skills, coordination, and a sense of rhythm while encouraging group participation and joy, perfectly suited to their love of movement and sound.
Dance
Our Pre-K dance program gets students moving to music with easy steps and creative expression, designed for their growing coordination and confidence. Whether following a teacher-led routine or inventing their own moves, children develop gross motor skills and self-awareness in a playful, supportive environment that celebrates their natural energy.

Listening Center
In our listening center, Pre-K students use headphones to enjoy stories or songs, tailored to build their attention spans and auditory processing skills. This quiet, focused activity lets them follow narratives independently, boosting comprehension and vocabulary in a way that’s engaging and manageable for their age, while fostering a love for storytelling.
Writing Center
In our Pre-K classrooms, we focus on developing pre-literacy and pre-writing skills to prepare students for future reading and writing success. Our 4-year-old program features a writing center stocked with a variety of materials, including three-sided pencils to support proper grip, colored pencils, markers, crayons, dry erase boards with markers, sand trays for writing, and magnetic alphabets. Students have the opportunity to practice their writing through various activities, including tracing, independent writing, and name recognition, promoting both fine motor skills and self-expression.
